The House

So, Georges and I have been living in this house since about mid-August. It's owned by my parents (it was their first house and where I spent the first 8 years of my life). Up until August, it was used as a rental property, but my parents grew weary of managing tenants.
They considered selling it, but I couldn't let them put it on the market in its current state since it's a little run down after years of neglect. Instead, I made a deal with them -- Georges and I live here rent-free, but we have to put in the work or foot the bills to fix it up over the next year or two, the goal being that my parents will get a slightly better return when they do sell it.
Of course, I'm finding that this is easier said than done since I know next to nothing about renovating houses, plus I have a regular day job that eats up most of my time.
What have I gotten myself into??
Shortly after I moved into this house, I discovered a TV show that reminds me of my situation: The Adam Carolla Project. This show demonstrates what could go seriously wrong with a project like this. Luckily, I am being much less ambitious than Adam Carolla, so maybe there's some hope for success!
